An Introduction to Pichu

The actual meaning of the term “Pichu” is sponging or padding. The use of cotton pads dipped in Ayurvedic oils during this therapy justifies its name. According to experts, ancient Ayurvedic texts categorise Pichu as external therapy or Bahya Snehana. Depending on the site of application, Pichu is primarily of five types. They are Kati Pichu (for waist), Greeva Pichu (for neck), Janu Pichu (for knees), Shiro Pichu (for head), and Yoni Pichu (for vagina).

Preparation

1

Your Ayurvedic doctor will check you and decide which oil or ghee should be used for Pichu. The therapist heats the selected oil until it reaches the right therapeutic temperature.

Positioning the Patient

The patient is positioned depending on which part of the body will be treated. For instance, when treating the patient’s back, the therapist will advise him/her to lie face down.

2

The Procedure

The therapist soaks a thick linen/cotton pad in the heated oil and places it directly on the area to be treated. Warm oil will be drizzled on the pad from time to time to maintain its temperature.

3

Final Step

The therapy continues for 30 to 45 minutes, after which the cotton pad is removed. This should be followed by a gentle massage and an hour’s rest.
