Ayurvedic Sweating Therapy for Detoxification
Swedan can be an individual therapy as well as a preparatory step for Panchakarma.
Duration
70-75 minutes
Best For
Detoxification
Swedan is a Sanskrit word that has been derived from another Sanskrit word “Swid”, which means sweating. As its name suggests, Swedan is a therapeutic technique that induces sweat and promotes healing. Swedan can be categorised into five types depending on the source of the heat; these include Patra Pinda Swedan, Upanaha Swedan, Bashpa Swedan, Nadi Swedan, and Avagaha Swedan. As the procedure causes the patient to sweat profusely, it helps eliminate various harmful toxins from their system.
Ideal For:
1
The therapist prepares the patient’s body by massaging various parts using herbal oils. This helps loosen the toxins and soften various tissues.
The most common way of generating heat is through localised steam application or steam application by placing the patient inside a steam chamber (also known as Bashpa Swedan).
2
Your body will remain in the steam (or other heat source) until you start sweating profusely, which takes 20 to 30 minutes. Extreme perspiration indicates toxin removal.
3
Cooling down the body after a Swedan session is extremely important. The therapist wipes the patient’s body clean. This should be followed by a warm bath and at least an hour’s rest
4
Never miss consulting a qualified Ayurvedic doctor before undergoing Swedan. He or she is the best person to decide whether you are a suitable candidate for this therapy.
