An Introduction to Shirodhara

The term “Shirodhara” is formed of two Sanskrit words, “Shir”, which means head, and “Dhara”, which means stream. The treatment, as its name suggests, involves pouring a stream of medicated warm liquid (formed of oil, herbal decoctions, and/or milk) on the patient’s head, the forehead to be more precise. If therapy is done by an experienced therapist, i.e., someone who follows the ancient Ayurvedic scriptures flawlessly, Shirodhara can induce deep relaxation and reverse neurological and psychological issues.

Preparation

1

The therapist makes the patient lie down in a supine position and places a rolled towel or tiny pillow beneath his/her neck. The patient’s hair must be pulled back using a hair band or a cloth.

Preparatory Massage

Before beginning the actual procedure, the therapist massages the neck, head, and scalp of the patient for around 10 minutes. This step helps release tension

2

Placing the Pot

A pot with a tiny hole at its base is hung in a way so that it stays 10 to 15 cm above the patient’s forehead. The pot is filled with medical herbal liquids, milk, or oil.

3

The Actual Treatment

For the next 30 to 45 minutes, the therapist moves the pot from left to right so that a constant stream of the medicated liquid falls on the patient’s forehead.
