An Introduction to Udvartana

This ancient massage technique detoxifies the body, improves circulation, and aids the weight loss process. The name of this therapy has been derived from two Sanskrit words. The first one is “Urdha”, which means upward. The second one is “Vartana”, which refers to the act of moving. The name comes from the fact that, unlike conventional massage techniques, it doesn’t use downward strokes. The therapist performs Udvartana using upward strokes

Preparation

1

The therapist prepares an herbal scrub using ingredients such as chickpea flour, turmeric, lemon peel, neem, sandalwood, mustard seeds, coconut oil, almond oil, sesame oil, milk, and/or dried rose petals.

Application

The paste, which should have a mud-like consistency, is then applied gently to the patient’s body.

2

The Therapy

The therapist uses upward strokes to work the scrub into the patient’s skin, remove toxins, and stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation. The action also removes dead skin cells, leaving the treated areas smooth, supple, and glowing.

3

Rest

The session continues for around 35 to 45 minutes, in which every body part is massaged for three to five minutes. Once the process is over, the paste gets wiped off, and the patient is advised to rest for at least an hour.
